The Award was established to honor the late Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma whose life and profession was dedicated to the pursuit of justice and social reform, human rights, peace and service to the nation. It recognizes Filipino men and women in the legal profession who advocate for social justice, human rights, peace- and nation-building, and committed to humanitarian works as well as continue to hold on to the principles of truth, justice, moral courage, compassion and integrity in their work.
Senator Jovito R. Salonga reaped the 1st Justice Palma Award
(2009) The respected statesman Senator Jovito Salonga humbly accepted the award last November 23, 2009 at Edsa Shangri-la Hotel. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Former Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide Jr. as the Guest Speaker with the honor of Justice Artemio Panganiban, Mayor Alfredo Lim, and Former Secretary Alfonso Yuchengo. In his acceptance speech the Senator reminisced Justice Palma’s ideals and achievements and wittingly said “with respect to legal erudition, I do not pretend to be erudite but whether erudite or not, I am forever grateful to all of you giving me the very first award of the Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma Foundation”. He was given a trophy sculptured by National Artist Ramon Orlina.
The event was hosted by Boots Anson Roa and a dance intermission was presented by the dance troupe of the Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School (JCMP HS).
