Child victims of abuse and exploitation who are seeking justice are further traumatized by their experience in court. Children often accept the responsibility for the abuse, and now they had to accept the stress of the task to attest her/his case or to disprove the claim of the perpetrator.

As courts were developed and governed by adults, it is not meant to be child-friendly. Problems occur when it is their time to become witnesses, such as psychosomatic illnesses of fever, stomach pain, or headaches that is caused by the anxiety that they will be talking to strangers, seeing their abuser and remembering their abusive experience.

But, with appropriate preparation, children can fully and actively participate in the court processes where their testimonies are vital. In view of that, the Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma Foundation (JCMPF), the Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse (CPTCSA), and Action against Violence and Exploitation, Inc. (ACTVE) initiated the Kids and Teens Court Awareness Program (KTCAP). The KTCAP aims to reduce the children’s fear of the court and be at ease during their hearings by providing them knowledge about the court/justice system.

The KTCAP’s target beneficiaries are children below the age of 18 who are victims of abuse and exploitation, and children who are possible witnesses to a crime. It is a one-day activity where a lecture is conducted in the morning, and then an exposure trip in the afternoon at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court or Marikina City Regional Trial Court, wherein discussions between the children and the judge take place in the courtroom or his/her chamber.

The program aims to (a) increase the knowledge of child victims about the court or justice system, and (b) put significance on the child’s testimony and value on testifying before the court.
